A Chrome extension that fills job applications: what it does, and what it leaves to you
Applying to forty jobs means typing the same details into forty forms. A browser extension can do the typing. This is what a good one does, what it must never do, and how JobFlo's works.
Forty forms, one set of facts
Every application wants the same things: who you are, how to reach you, your resume, your links, whether you may work in the country, whether you need sponsorship, what you expect to be paid, how you heard about them. The hiring systems differ (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, Workday, SmartRecruiters, iCIMS, Taleo), the questions barely do.
That is not job hunting. That is data entry. The job hunting is choosing where to apply, tailoring what you send, and following up. An extension should take the data entry and leave you the rest.
What the JobFlo extension does
- Runs where applications are. It switches itself on for the application pages of the hiring systems it knows (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, Rippling, Gem, Recruitee, Jobvite, Breezy, Workday, SmartRecruiters, iCIMS, BambooHR, SuccessFactors, Taleo). On any other careers page, click the JobFlo icon in the toolbar and choose Activate on this page.
- Fills the form from one profile. Contact details, work history and education where the form asks for them, links, your saved answers to the recurring questions, and dropdowns, not just text boxes. Forms with several steps are filled as each step appears.
- Attaches your resume. Your default, or one you pick, or a version tailored to this job and built while you read the form (how that works).
- Shows its work. A panel beside the form lists what was filled, what still needs you and why, what it did not recognise, and which required questions are still empty.
- Records the application. When the site shows its confirmation page after you submit, the application is marked Applied on your JobFlo dashboard, with the answers given and the resume used. No logging on your side.
- Learns your answers. An answer you typed by hand on one form can be saved for the next with one click.
What it must never do
An extension that types into job applications can do harm fast. These are the lines JobFlo's does not cross, and you should expect the same of any you install.
- It never submits. The extension fills; you read, and you press the site's own submit button. Every time. Auto-submitting is how people send the wrong resume to the right company.
- It never guesses. A question it is not sure about is left empty and listed for you. A guessed answer to "Have you worked for us before?" or "Are you subject to a non-compete?" is worse than none.
- Sensitive questions need an answer you verified. Work authorization, sponsorship, pay, background checks, and the voluntary questions about gender, race, veteran status or disability are filled only from answers you saved and marked Verified yourself.
- Some things it never touches. Passwords, one-time codes, payment details, government ID numbers.
- It runs only where you let it. On the application pages of the hiring systems it knows, and on a page where you clicked Activate. Not on your bank, not on your mail.
Getting started
- Sign up at app.jobflo.me with the account you already have (Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn or GitHub). There is no password.
- Add the extension from the Chrome Web Store. It works in Chrome and Edge; a Firefox add-on is on its way.
- Fill in your profile, upload a resume, and save the answers every application asks for. Ten minutes, once.
- Open a job from the JobFlo job board, or any careers page, and press Fill application.
Filling applications and tracking them is free. Tailored resumes, "how you match" on each job, the daily apply queue and email tracking are part of Pro; every account starts with a Pro trial, no card.
Questions
Is it safe to give an extension my details?
Ask three things: where the data is stored, where the extension runs, and whether it submits. JobFlo stores your profile in your JobFlo account, runs only on application pages (and on pages you activate), and never submits. Your details are used to fill and track your applications and for nothing else; delete the account and everything goes with it.
Does it work with Workday?
The extension runs on Workday application pages (myworkdayjobs.com). Workday forms are long and come in steps; the extension fills each step as it appears, and the panel shows what is left. Workday accounts, which Workday itself asks you to create per company, are yours to make.
Can it apply to jobs for me automatically?
No, by design. It can line jobs up: with the apply queue, the best new matches of your saved searches are waiting each morning with the form prefilled when you open it. Sending is still your click.
What happens to an application after I submit?
JobFlo marks it Applied and keeps the job description, the answers given, the resume used and a timeline. With email tracking on, replies from the employer update the status by themselves: received, interview, assessment, offer, rejected.
The form, filled. You press submit.
JobFlo finds jobs on company career pages, tailors your resume to each one, fills the application form in your browser, and tracks every reply. You check each form and press submit yourself. Free to start, no card needed.
